Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib has said the Government will not compel islands to have their roads developed with asphalt.
Speaking to State media during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s ongoing visit to Baa Atoll, the Minister said road development will be carried out according to the preferences of local councils and residents. He noted that the President’s visits to the islands serve as a platform for councils to raise concerns and have their priorities addressed based on community needs.
Minister Dr Muththalib explained that in the past, proposals were made to supply vehicles and road maintenance equipment to address issues such as flooding on islands with sand roads, particularly in areas with local tourism. However, no council had accepted this proposal at the time, and the Government instead pursued road development through asphalt laying.
He said the situation has since shifted, with some councils now requesting road maintenance vehicles instead of asphalt roads. So far, three councils have made such requests.
“If residents prefer a more cost-effective approach that also delivers social and economic benefits, we can carry out the technical work to address flooding issues while providing equipment for road maintenance. This would reduce costs and help residents to preserve the island’s natural scenery,” he said.
President Dr Muizzu has made similar comments during his Baa Atoll tour, noting that asphalt laying or stone paving may not always be suitable – particularly for islands that face environmental challenges.
