The Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has stated that it is expanding its operations in line with Government policies.
In a statement, WAMCO refuted rumours circulating on social media that the corporation is acquiring land on a commercial basis and consulting councils to enter the guesthouse business, describing the reports as misleading.
WAMCO explained that waste management services have long been subsidised by the Government. However, under the current policy to reduce the burden on State finances, the company is pursuing a more self-sustaining model. Its management is therefore prioritising business expansion to generate surplus revenue.
As part of this approach, each waste management centre in the islands will be treated as a profit centre. The company noted that, in smaller islands with limited populations, expansion is necessary to ensure costs are met without placing an additional burden on residents. WAMCO said the measures are based on research and tailored to ensure they remain beneficial to individual communities.
The corporation highlighted several initiatives being undertaken under this policy, including the Kaafu Hinmafushi and Lhosfushi lagoon development project, securing a partner to carry out waste recycling, and advancing projects related to waste-to-energy and plastic recycling.
