The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) and the Ministry of Islamic Affairs have signed an agreement today to allocate land for the construction of two new mosques in Hulhumalé Phase 2.

At a special ceremony held on 2 September, HDC Managing Director Ali Zuhair signed the agreement on behalf of the corporation, while the Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, signed on behalf of the Ministry. The land allocation covers two plots, measuring 27,920 acres and 20,720 acres respectively. According to the agreement, each mosque will be able to accommodate between 2,000 to 3,000 worshippers.

When the current Administration took office, Hulhumalé Phase 2 had just a handful of mosques. Efforts are now underway to expand capacity, with new mosques being built to serve the area’s increasing population.
