President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has instructed the Maldives Police Service and relevant authorities to stop, question, and take legal action against foreigners found on the streets after midnight, following public concerns over activities that allegedly violate social norms.

In a post shared on social media, the President said this would be enforced starting tonight, requiring police and relevant enforcement agencies to question foreigners found in public places between 12:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., and to take legal action if any violations of Maldivian law are identified.

The President stated that the decision was prompted by concerns that some foreigners residing in the Maldives are engaging in activities during night hours that go against general social standards.

This follows a public meeting held with residents of Galolhu on Tuesday, during which several residents raised concerns about foreigners gathering in different parts of Malé City late at night and engaging in activities perceived to be inconsistent with social norms. Some residents also noted that in other countries, individuals found outside during restricted hours are routinely questioned by authorities.

After listening to the concerns raised, the President instructed relevant institutions to investigate whether such activities are taking place and to ensure that foreigners found outdoors during late-night hours are questioned accordingly.
