Speaker of the People’s Majlis Abdul Raheem Abdulla has described the Maldivian Parliament building as a symbol of the longstanding and close relations between the Maldives and Pakistan, during a meeting with the Speaker of Pakistan’s National Assembly, who is currently on an official visit to the Maldives.
The Speaker of Pakistan’s National Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, arrived in the Maldives on a three-day visit at the invitation of the Speaker of the People’s Majlis. As part of the visit, he paid a courtesy call on Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla at the People’s Majlis.
During the meeting, Speaker Abdul Raheem highlighted the historic bilateral ties between the Maldives and Pakistan and discussed avenues to further strengthen parliamentary and intergovernmental cooperation. He expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s continued assistance to the Maldives, particularly in the areas of education and healthcare.
The Speaker also acknowledged Pakistan’s contribution to the development of parliamentary institutions in the Maldives, noting that the Parliament building itself stands as a reflection of the strong friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
Following the meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the People’s Majlis and the National Assembly of Pakistan. The agreement aims to enhance cooperation through capacity-building programmes for Members of Parliament and parliamentary staff, with a view to strengthening institutional ties and knowledge-sharing between the two legislatures.
