Maldives' first conference on national identity, Kalhuohfunmi-Dhivehi Gaumiyyathuge Dharubaaru, was inaugurated by Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef at the Islamic University of Maldives.
The biannual event, which is to be organised biannually by Dhivehi Gaumiyyathuge Isvaaru, and the Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture, and Heritage, explores Maldivian history, culture, and heritage through academic sessions and research presentations.
The conference features nine research papers on topics such as the origins of Islam in the Maldives, local dialects, and ancient Islamic designs, aiming to advance intellectual understanding within the domain of Maldivian National Identity.
In his address, Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage, Adam Naseer Ibrahim, described the event as a pivotal step in understanding Maldivian history and heritage. “This marks the beginning of a scholarly journey into our individuality, history, and roots. It's a step towards ensuring our cultural identity is preserved through a structured academic approach,” he said.
During the opening ceremony, the Vice President was honoured with a symbolic plaque, presented by Minister Adam Naseer.
Scheduled as part of the academic activities for this year's western monsoon season, the conference welcomes public participation and features three distinct sessions.
Academics from diverse fields will present nine research papers exploring themes such as the introduction of Islam to the Maldives, local dialects, culture, ancient Islamic designs, and the nation's origins during the conference, which is jointly organised by the Islamic University and Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture, and Heritage.
