Member of Parliament for Dhuvaafaru Constituency Mohamed Ali has said there is no reason to hide or withhold disclosure of income received.
The MP made the remarks on social media following public discussion over the recently published asset declarations of parliamentarians.
Mohamed Ali, who was first elected to the 18th Parliament in 2014, said he has never had any business interests and has relied solely on his parliamentary salary and allowances to cover his living expenses and support some of his constituents’ needs.
“My constituents know the truth that I have no business and no way to earn more money. My salary and allowances have been spent on my living expenses and some of the needs of the constituents,” he wrote.
He explained that after losing his seat in the 19th Parliament elections, he worked in a shop in Malé City’s marketplace to support himself, a fact he said many of his constituents could attest to.
According to the MP, his re-election to the 20th Parliament reflects the trust of the people of Dhuvaafaru that he has no illicit income, adding that he continues to live on his parliamentary salary in his current term.
