The Henveiru Ferry Terminal area in Malé has been opened for vessel use following the closure of sections of Boduthakurufaanu Magu lagoon, where major development works are under way.
According to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), the decision was taken to ease disruption caused by the closure of the lagoon area near the project site. From now on, the Henveiru Ferry Terminal and the lagoon will be used to accommodate atoll ferry launches, providing alternative access for passengers and vessels.
MTCC has urged passengers travelling on inter-island ferries to arrive at the site at least 10 minutes before departure, to help maintain schedules. The company said the arrangement would provide relief to both ferry operators and commuters, as the Henveiru terminal already serves a large number of launches travelling between Malé and the atolls.
Speaking to State media, MTCC Project Manager Abdulla Faiz said that updates on diversions and traffic changes linked to the Boduthakurufaanu Magu development project will be shared promptly. He added that the Maldives Police Service, MTCC, and other agencies will coordinate to inform the public through social media and official notices.
The MVR 144.5 million project, awarded by the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, aims to widen Malé’s outer ring road to four lanes with modern features including a stormwater drainage system, improved signage, and pedestrian-friendly design.
