Police officer dismissed after arrest in drug case

The Maldives Police Service has decided to dismiss a police officer arrested in Male’ City in connection with a drug case on 19 July.

The officer, identified as Aishath Shiyaza, 31, Alifu Dhaalu Kunburudhoo, was apprehended by the Joint Intelligence and Investigation Taskforce following a tip-off. The Police Disciplinary Board confirmed her dismissal after completing its review of the case.

Another individual, Saifullah Ahmed, 26, Haa Alifu Dhidhdhoo, was also arrested in relation to the same operation. Police recovered three plastic packets containing suspected narcotics and an illegal pill from the suspects.

According to remand orders, Shiyaza was placed in custody for five days, while Saifullah was remanded for 10 days.

Drug abuse continues to be one of the Maldives’ most pressing social issues. Official statistics show that 1,673 drug-related cases were reported in 2024, with 1,010 cases recorded so far this year.
