President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and President Dr Mohamed Muizzu--

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has extended greetings to Brazil on the occasion of its Independence Day, reaffirming the Maldives’ commitment to deepening cooperation in areas such as climate action and sustainable development.

In his message to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the government, and the people of Brazil, President Dr Muizzu conveyed good wishes on behalf of Maldivians. He highlighted the two nations’ growing partnership, noting in particular the Maldives’ participation in COP30, due to be held in Belém, Brazil, as a key moment for joint climate advocacy.

The President also expressed optimism that relations between Malé and Brasília will continue to expand, while offering his personal best wishes for President Lula’s health and for the continued progress of the Brazilian people.

Posting separately on his official X account, President Dr Muizzu reflected on nearly four decades of diplomatic ties between the Maldives and Brazil, which were first established in September 1988. He described the relationship as one rooted in shared goals and mutual respect, and pledged that his administration would keep working to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

Brazil’s Independence Day, celebrated annually on 7 September, commemorates its 1822 declaration of independence from Portuguese rule and the establishment of Brazil as a sovereign state.
