Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has completed sheet piling on a 132-metre stretch under segment 1 of the Badathakurufaanu Magu development project in Malé City, a major infrastructure initiative aimed at easing congestion and improving traffic flow.

According to MTCC, the next stage will involve reclaiming land by filling sand into the road extension area, alongside ongoing concrete works on the embankment. The company has set a target to complete the current section of works by October.

Launched on 21 August 2025, the government’s road development project aims to modernise one of the capital’s busiest stretches and ease chronic traffic congestion. Once completed, the road will feature four lanes, a stormwater drainage system to prevent flooding, improved traffic signage, and a dedicated pedestrian walkway.

The project, valued at MVR 144.5 million, was awarded by the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure to MTCC. It covers an 830-metre section of Malé’s outer ring road, stretching from the Local Market to the Hulhumalé Ferry Terminal. Of the 830-metre stretch, 737 metres will be stabilised with sheet piling and backfilled to create space for the road expansion.

The project site lies in one of Malé’s busiest areas, home to major Government offices, commercial establishments, and the city’s main port access. According to the Ministry, construction is scheduled for completion within 455 days.
