Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has announced that 291 tonnes of goods were transported through the country’s sea-to-air cargo service in August, with shipments reaching 18 international destinations.

According to MPL, the shipments accounted for 77 TEUs and were carried by nine major airlines, including Virgin Atlantic, Etihad Airways, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Azerbaijan Airlines, Saudia, Swiss Airlines, and ITA Airways.

The August consignments were delivered to countries such as Italy, the United States, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Canada, the Netherlands, Turkey, Denmark, Sweden, Portugal, Austria, Czech Republic, Ireland, Belgium, Greece, Palestine, and Kosovo.

Launched jointly by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) and MPL in May 2024, the sea-to-air service allows goods arriving by sea to be transhipped swiftly by air, providing an alternative trade route that has already generated significant revenue for the Maldivian economy.

MPL stated that demand for the service continues to expand, with increasing participation from airlines and trading partners. Officials added that the initiative highlights the Maldives’ growing role in global logistics and its potential to further scale up as a transit hub in the region.
