The Maldives has taken part in the 60th regular session of the UN Human Rights Council, which is being held in Geneva, Switzerland, until 8 October 2025.
The session was inaugurated by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, who outlined key global human rights challenges in his opening statement.
As part of its engagement, the Maldives delegation will deliver national statements across several agenda items. It will also present two major resolutions: a new initiative addressing the impacts of sea-level rise on human rights, and the triennial resolution on the role of prevention in human rights promotion and protection. In addition, the Maldives will deliver a joint statement on behalf of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) under the agenda item on Technical Assistance and Capacity-Building.
The Maldives will also align with the Non-Aligned Movement and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation in issuing group statements on global human rights violations. In its national capacity, it will address urgent humanitarian concerns, with particular emphasis on the situation in Palestine, and take part in the Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on Myanmar.
The delegation is led by Dr Salma Rasheed, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the UN in Geneva and Vice President of the Human Rights Council for the Asia-Pacific Group. Dr Rasheed will also chair several meetings during the session. Other members of the delegation include Counsellors Adam Hamid and Uza. Aminath Shifaya Ibrahim, Second Secretary, Aishath Rayahyn, Third Secretary, Faiha Firaq, and Attaché Raaidh Saeedh.
The Human Rights Council, comprising 47 Member States, is mandated to promote and protect human rights worldwide and address country-specific situations. The Maldives’ current term on the Council runs until 2025.
