The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a travel advisory urging Maldivian nationals to avoid travelling to Nepal due to the ongoing unrest in the country.
In an official statement, the Ministry advised citizens to follow instructions from Nepalese authorities, the Maldivian High Commission in India, and the Ministry itself. Maldivians currently in Nepal have been urged to stay clear of protest areas and prioritise their safety at all times.
The crisis follows a Supreme Court ruling that shut down social media platforms, triggering widespread protests that initially began as anti-corruption demonstrations but have since escalated. A nationwide curfew has been imposed in parts of the capital, Kathmandu, with authorities asking residents to remain indoors except for essential needs. At least 19 people have been killed and dozens injured in clashes since yesterday.
The unrest has also prompted the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.
The Ministry noted that a considerable number of Maldivian doctors are currently pursuing specialised studies in Nepal. Their safety is being closely monitored in coordination with the Maldivian High Commission in India and Nepalese authorities. Officials further assured that assistance will be provided if the situation worsens.
