Attorney General Uz Ahmed Usham addressing the Universal Periodic Review
Attorney General Uz Ahmed Usham has stated that the Maldivian Government will not tolerate hate speech in any form.
Speaking at the fourth round of Universal Periodic Review on the Human Rights Situation in the Maldives, the Attorney General highlighted the country’s ongoing efforts to safeguard and promote human rights. He emphasised that Islam has been the foundation of Maldivian society for over eight centuries and that the Government will continue to prioritise the principles of Islam in its laws and administration.
He reaffirmed that any act contrary to Islamic principles will not be permitted, and that the protection of human rights will be ensured within the framework of these fundamental values, the Constitution, and the international treaties to which the Maldives is a party. Usham stressed that while the Government remains committed to upholding the rights guaranteed to every individual, it will not allow hate speech or incitement to disrupt national peace and social harmony.
He explained that the Maldives has a strong legal framework in place to prevent hate speech and intimidation of human rights defenders and social organisations, including laws addressing online threats and cybercrime. The Government, he added, is committed to maintaining a safe online environment, ensuring accountability, and protecting human rights activists through legal and institutional measures.
The Attorney General also outlined key progress achieved in recent years, noting that the number of women serving as judges now exceeds the national target. He further highlighted the Government’s focus on youth empowerment, including national initiatives aimed at equipping young people with essential skills.
Additionally, Usham stated that the Government is developing a comprehensive National Development Plan designed to secure the rights and well-being of all citizens. He said this work is being carried out with extensive public input and consultation. The Attorney General reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to improving living standards by providing adequate housing and ensuring that all citizens can live with dignity.
