Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen has announced that vehicle registration services for foreigners have been temporarily suspended, citing urgent efforts to address worsening road congestion in Malé.

In a statement shared on X, Minister Ameen said the decision was taken as part of ongoing amendments to road traffic laws and regulations, aimed at easing overcrowding on the capital’s streets. He noted that the rapid increase in vehicles, particularly in Malé, has placed significant pressure on existing infrastructure, necessitating immediate corrective measures.

The minister added that revisions to the Land Transport Act and related regulations are currently underway to introduce the necessary changes. The temporary suspension will remain in effect until the updated legal framework is finalised.
