The Ministry of Tourism and Environment has announced that a 400 kWp solar PV hybrid system, along with a 344 kWh battery energy storage system (BESS), is being installed in Raa Maduvvari as part of the Government's push toward sustainable energy development. Once operational, the system is expected to cut the island’s diesel use by 187,902 litres annually and reduce carbon emissions by 460 tonnes each year, significantly contributing to climate mitigation and cleaner energy production for residents.
The project aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s national goal of generating 33 per cent of the country’s electricity from renewable energy by 2028. When he took office, Maldives had 53 megawatts of renewable capacity, now increased to 70 MW, with 170 MW of renewable projects currently underway nationwide.
