The Elections Commission (EC) has announced that the next Local Council Elections will be held on 4 April 2026, confirming the election date as preparations begin nationwide.

According to the Commission, a total of 226 constituencies will be contested in the upcoming elections. To administer the polls, the EC estimates that more than 7,000 officials will be required at voting stations across the country.

Applications for individuals wishing to serve as polling officials are now open and must be submitted online through the my.elections.gov.mv portal via e-pass. The deadline for submissions is 3:00 p.m. on 21 December.

The EC has also opened recruitment for various other election-related roles, with vacancies available in Human Resources, Administration, Media, Public Relations, Information Technology, Finance and Legal Affairs. Applicants may submit their documents via email to [email protected].

As part of its public awareness efforts ahead of the 2026 elections, the Commission will conduct voter education sessions across the country. Awareness teams are scheduled to visit 36 islands in 12 atolls during November and December, providing information on the importance of voting and the electoral process. The sessions will be carried out in collaboration with independent institutions and non-governmental organisations.
