A USD 2.4 million project to strengthen the health and border-control capacity of Velana International Airport (VIA) and Gan International Airport, aimed at improving protection against infectious diseases and enhancing overall airport security. The initiative, funded by Japanese government, implemented through the International Organization for Migration (IOM), introduced advanced biometric systems, upgraded passport and ID verification, and provided extensive training and equipment to improve border security, health preparedness, sanitation, and waste-management systems in line with international health regulations.
The project also delivered new machinery and medical resources to support screening processes and emergency response capabilities at Maldives’ two main gateways. Officials from MACL, Maldives Immigration, and the Government of Japan highlighted that the upgrades will make airport operations safer, more efficient, and better prepared for future public health threats, strengthening the Maldives’ ability to safeguard both travellers and the national border.
