The Elections Commission of Maldives has published the final report on the allocation of constituencies and council seats for the upcoming local council elections and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections scheduled for 4 April 2026.

The report, published in the Government Gazette and on the Commission’s website, is based on population data available as of 30 September 2025. Under recent amendments to the Local Council Elections Act, islands with a population of below 2,000 will elect three councillors and three WDC members, while islands with populations above 2,000 will elect five councillors and five WDC members.

According to the report, 133 islands will elect three councillors, while 46 islands will elect five councillors. In islands with three councillors, one seat is reserved for women, while islands with five councillors will have two seats reserved for women. The combined population of the 133 islands electing three councillors stands at 136,957, accounting for 399 council seats, while the 46 islands with five councillors have a combined population of 136,298, accounting for 230 council seats.

Following amendments to the law, the total number of councillors to be elected across islands, excluding cities, will stand at 629. The Commission said constituencies in cities have also been demarcated based on population figures as of 30 September 2025.

In the cities, Kulhudhuffushi and Thinadhoo, with populations of 11,110 and 10,453 respectively, will each elect seven council members, including a mayor, with two seats reserved for women. Fuvahmulah City, which has a population of 13,802, will elect nine council members, including the mayor, with three seats reserved for women. Addu City, with a population of 28,800, will elect 11 council members, including a mayor and councillors, with four seats reserved for women.

For Malé, the Commission said councillors will be elected based on the constituencies used in the previous parliamentary elections. With a current population of 83,813, 17 councillors will be elected to the Malé City Council, six of whom will be women. Including the mayoral seat, the Malé City Council will comprise 18 members, with the mayor elected through a secret ballot and the remaining councillors elected from their respective constituencies.

The Elections Commission said it is currently making final preparations for both the local council elections and the Women’s Development Committee elections.
