A Chinese technical team has arrived in the Maldives to undertake survey and design work for the construction of a tertiary hospital in Villimalé.

The work follows a letter of exchange signed between the Maldives and China in June this year. The detailed design of the planned 100-bed tertiary hospital will be carried out with free assistance from the Chinese Government.

According to the Ministry, a project management consultant team from China Northeast Architectural Design and Research Institute has already arrived in the Maldives. The team is scheduled to remain in the country until 15 January 2026 to conduct surveys and other preparatory works required for the project.

The Ministry said the current phase focuses on strengthening the hospital’s design framework and carrying out geotechnical surveys to support construction planning.

All related activities are being implemented in coordination with key local stakeholders and the Chinese technical team, the Ministry added.
