Air quality has deteriorated to unhealthy levels in several parts of the Maldives, prompting alerts from the Health Protection Agency (HPA).

According to HPA air quality standards, conditions in some areas have reached levels that are hazardous to public health. The HPA has issued a red alert for Villimalé and Dhaalu Kudahuvadhoo, where air quality levels are considered hazardous.

Based on the US Air Quality Index (AQI), air quality in the Malé area is currently recorded at 120, placing it in the orange category, which is unhealthy for sensitive groups. Air quality levels in Villimalé stand at 162, while Kudahuvadhoo has recorded an AQI of 165, both falling within the red category and posing potential adverse health effects for the general public.

The HPA said air quality in Addu City, Gan and Funadhoo remains at a moderate level, classified under the yellow alert category. Residents in these areas, particularly those at higher risk of respiratory illnesses, have been advised to limit outdoor activities.

Air pollution is a recurring issue in the Maldives, particularly in the Malé region, and authorities have noted that the severity of the situation has been increasing annually. The HPA has urged the public to remain vigilant and follow health advisories as conditions continue to be monitored.
