A discussion forum on the Maldives’ National Policy on Agroforestry and Trees Outside Forests was held in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, World Agroforestry, and the International Center for Forestry Research.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, the meeting focused on key aspects of the National Policy on Agroforestry and Trees Outside Forests 2026 and gathered input from relevant stakeholders.

The primary objective of the policy is to establish an economically viable and environmentally sustainable system by restoring vegetation across the country’s farmlands and residential areas. The policy highlights the importance of agriculture and horticulture while taking into account the Maldives’ unique environmental conditions and soil-related challenges.

The policy also includes measures to empower agriculture-related associations, introduce incentives to promote tree planting, and utilise scientific research to revive and sustainably benefit from plant species found in the Maldives.

The Ministry noted that effective implementation of the policy is expected to contribute to environmental protection, increase agricultural productivity, and support long-term economic growth.

Representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, World Agroforestry, island councils, and other relevant institutions participated in the forum.
