President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has met with cargo vehicle drivers operating at the Malé Commercial Harbour to discuss challenges affecting cargo transport operations and possible solutions.

During the meeting, drivers highlighted several operational difficulties, including the lack of designated parking areas for cargo vehicles near the port and issues related to the transfer of vehicle ownership. They also raised concerns over delays caused by spare parts being held in bonded warehouses, as well as congestion arising from long lorry queues.

Discussions also focused on accelerating the development of a goods clearance application, which is being introduced as part of the Administration’s digitalisation drive. Other matters addressed included the Government-directed decommissioning of older vehicles and the expedited registration process for imported replacement vehicles.

The drivers further called for formal recognition of their profession, requesting an official Government-issued document acknowledging their role and designation within the cargo transport sector.

In response, the President assured the drivers that the Government would coordinate with relevant authorities to identify effective solutions to the issues raised.

As part of ongoing stakeholder consultations, President Dr Muizzu also met with senior representatives from cargo clearance companies on Thursday.
