Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef has said that Malé City needs a mayor who can work at the same pace as President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to effectively address the city’s challenges.

Speaking at the opening of the campaign office of the People’s National Congress (PNC) mayoral candidate Moosa Ali Jaleel, the Vice President said it is important to elect leaders who are capable of resolving the many issues facing the capital.

He said President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has held a long-standing vision for Malé City dating back to his tenure as mayor, and that this vision has been reflected in policies outlined in the President’s manifesto. According to the Vice President, Jaleel is a candidate who has the commitment and capacity to work in step with the President.

The Vice President said local councils should focus on working with the Government to serve the public, noting that accountability of the Government rests with elected members of Parliament. He stressed that councils require executive leadership that cooperates closely with the Government to deliver services to residents.

He further said that while the Government has made sustained efforts to address congestion and traffic issues in Malé City, cooperation from the city council has been lacking over the past two years.

The Vice President urged the public to elect a mayor who will work in coordination with the Government to resolve the long-standing challenges faced by Malé City.
