The Maldives Parliament has officially approved the appointment of Fuad Thaufeeq, the former President of the Election Commission, as the country’s new Ambassador to Thailand.

The decision came during a parliamentary session where 58 lawmakers voted in favour of Fuad’s appointment.

The nomination was initially put forward by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who sought parliamentary approval on November, 25. Following protocol, the proposal was referred to the Parliament's Foreign Relations Committee for review.

The Foreign Relations Committee undertook a detailed study of Fuad’s candidacy, gathering information from multiple entities, including the President's Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Elections Commission, Maldives Correctional Service, and the Department of Judicial Administration.

Presenting the findings, the committee's Vice Chairman Mohamed Dawood, MP for North Kulhudhuffushi highlighted that the report reflected the results of extensive research and consultations.

With the committee’s endorsement, the proposal was put to a vote during the parliamentary session. Fuad’s appointment received support, demonstrating a consensus among lawmakers regarding his qualifications and experience.

Fuad Thaufeeq’s tenure as President of the Elections Commission concluded on November 23, following his completion of two five-year terms. In addition to his work with the Elections Commission, Fuad has held roles at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Secretariat of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), bringing extensive administrative and diplomatic experience to his new appointment.
