The Maldivian Parliament has approved amendments to the Penal Code to criminalise cybercrime and enhance international cooperation in cyber-related legal cases.
The bill, introduced by Maafushi MP Hussain Riza Adam on behalf of the government, addresses a growing need to regulate computer-related offences.
Under the revised Section 240 of the Penal Code, the bill outlines several computer-related crimes, including unauthorised access to computers, interception of data, interference with systems, cyber violence, fraud, and copyright violations. Provisions also criminalise the misuse of devices and computer-related forgery.
However, exceptions are made for access granted through court orders or legal authorisation.
The Judiciary Committee, chaired by Manadhoo MP Husnee Mubarik, reviewed the bill extensively, incorporating feedback from the public and relevant authorities. The committee ensured the bill’s provisions addressed gaps in the existing legal framework regarding cybercrimes.
During the parliamentary session, MP Husnee noted that the legislation aims to address the lack of clear legal definitions for crimes committed through computers, providing a robust framework to combat cyber threats.
This legislation marks a significant step forward in ensuring the safety of digital systems in the Maldives while fostering international collaboration in addressing cybercrime.
