The Maldives Zakat House has reported that more than MVR 2.1 million was disbursed from the Zakat Fund for medical assistance in December 2025.
According to latest figures released by the Zakat House, a total of 185 individuals received financial support for medical treatment during the month, amounting to MVR 2.12 million. The institution noted that part of the disbursement covered payments made to individuals who had received approval prior to December, contributing to the higher overall expenditure for the month.
Breakdowns of expenditure show that the largest portion of funds was allocated for cancer treatment, with more than MVR 301,000 spent on related medical care. Assistance was also provided for patients suffering from respiratory and cardiac diseases, as well as kidney-related illnesses and transplant procedures. In addition, a significant share of funds was distributed to cover treatment for other medical conditions requiring financial support.
Beyond medical assistance, the Zakat Fund also provided support for emergency needs and housing-related expenses. In December, funds were allocated for urgent assistance to individuals facing immediate hardship, while additional support was extended towards down payments for housing.
Zakat House also disbursed funds for supporting religious and educational activities. This included funding for Qur’an memorisation and religious education programmes, the organisation of religious events, support for higher education, training programmes, and book translation initiatives.
Maldives Zakat House was established under the Zakat Act, which came into force in January 2019. The institution is mandated to manage and strengthen the national Zakat system, ensuring assistance reaches eligible individuals in accordance with Islamic principles.
