Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has reported that Phase Two of the Malé North Side Boduthakurufaanu Road Development Project has reached 87 per cent completion, with asphalt works scheduled to begin later this week.
According to MTCC, sub-base works have been fully completed, while ABC laying is currently 80 per cent complete and expected to be finalised by today. The company said the commencement of asphalt works will mark the next major stage of the project, which remains on track for completion ahead of Ramadan.
Other works currently under way include concrete works at the harbour-side loading and unloading area, as well as the installation of light posts and road signboards along the upgraded stretch.
Under the project, a 250-metre section of Boduthakurufaanu Magu from the Malé Local Market area to the North Harbour is being developed, with the road widened to six metres. In total, 1,088 metres of roadway from the Henveiru Ferry Terminal to the North Harbour is being upgraded as part of the overall project.
The first phase of the development, covering 140 metres, has already been completed. Once Phase Two is finalised, the project is expected to modernise road infrastructure in the market area, improve pedestrian safety, enhance stormwater drainage to reduce flooding, and ease congestion around the commercial harbour to support smoother transportation of goods within Malé City.
MTCC has said the newly developed section is expected to be opened to the public before Ramadan, upon completion of the remaining works.
