Member of Parliament for the Gaafu Alifu Villingili constituency, Azim Abdul Azeez, has stated that People’s National Congress (PNC) is committed to delivering on the pledges it has made to the public.

He made the remarks at a campaign event held in Villingili on Friday night to officially launch the PNC’s campaign for the upcoming Council Elections. The event was attended by candidates contesting for seats on the Villingili Council and the island’s Women’s Development Committee.

In his speech, Azim said that despite leading the Government on two occasions, the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had not brought the level of development to Villingili that residents had expected. He pointed to projects that remain incomplete, including a new Fenaka building for which MVR 47 million was allocated during the previous administration.

Azim also referred to a pledge to construct 200 housing units in Villingili, noting that work began on 50 units but was not completed before the end of the term.

He said Villingili requires sustained and coordinated development efforts, adding that councils must work closely with the Government to ensure projects are implemented efficiently. Azim expressed confidence that the PNC’s candidates would be able to support ongoing and future initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure and public services on the island.

Commenting on national politics, Azim noted that there have been differences in positions taken in Parliament, including on the national budget. He said such instances highlight the importance of cooperation between local councils and the Government to achieve development goals.

He also referenced an earlier proposal to construct a bridge connecting Villingili and Kooddoo, stating that while the idea had been discussed, it has not progressed.

The Member of Parliament stated the choice ultimately rests with the people of Villingili and encouraged voters to consider the island’s long-term development when casting their ballots in the Council Elections.
