The Ministry of Health has announced that development works on six hospitals across different regions of the Maldives are scheduled to be completed within this year.

Speaking in an interview with State media, State Minister for Health Ismail Shareef said that by the end of the current five-year term, the Maldives’ health system would witness transformative improvements in infrastructure. He noted that construction and upgrading works are already underway at several hospitals nationwide.

“At present, work on hospitals in various islands has been contracted and a number of projects are nearing completion. We expect that six hospitals will be completed and become operational within this year,” Shareef said.

The hospitals set to be completed this year include those in Haa Alifu Hoarafushi, Noonu Ken’dhikulhudhoo, Raa Dhuvaafaru, Baa Thulhaadhoo, Lhaviyani Hinnavaru and Kaafu Guraidhoo.

Accessing specialised healthcare services in Malé often requires patients from the atolls to travel to the capital, placing financial and logistical burdens on families. As part of efforts to address this challenge, the Government has prioritised upgrading regional and atoll hospitals, including the provision of essential medical equipment and expanded services.

The State budget for this year allocates a significant share to the health sector. The Government has stated that several new health-related projects are expected to commence before the end of the year, further strengthening healthcare services across the country.
