State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has announced it will conduct meter readings to prepare separate electricity bills for the month of Ramadan, in line with the Government’s decision to provide bill discounts during the holy month.
STELCO said the move follows the President’s pledge that households will be charged a maximum of MVR 400 for electricity bills during Ramadan. To facilitate the decision, the company said meter readings will be carried out on the 16th and 17th of this month to enable separate billing for the Ramadan period.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has provided a range of financial relief measures to the public during Ramadan since 2024, including discounts on electricity and water bills. The Government previously said MVR 130 million was spent on electricity and water bill discounts last year. This marks the third Ramadan in which bill discounts are being extended to all households.
In addition to utility bill discounts, the Government has distributed a case of canned tuna to each household and are continuing efforts to stabilise food prices during the fasting month. The Government has also declared the last 10 days of Ramadan as public holidays. The measures form part of efforts to support households during Ramadan.
