The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has imported a new stock of MVR 20 banknotes from the Ran Dhihafaheh currency series to ease the current shortage.

In a statement, the central bank said the additional notes were brought in to address limited availability in circulation. Earlier this month, MMA also released a fresh stock of MVR 100 notes in response to similar supply constraints.

The Ran Dhihafaheh series was first introduced in January 2016 as part of efforts to modernise the Maldivian currency system. The series features upgraded security elements and improved design specifications to enhance durability, ease of use and protection against counterfeiting.

Among the advanced security features is ultraviolet (UV) technology. Under ultraviolet light, the serial number and selected elements on the front of the note become visible, while remaining invisible under normal lighting conditions
