The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has reported that haze conditions have intensified again, leading to a significant reduction in visibility across much of the country.
In a statement issued on Monday, MET said the impact is currently most severe in the central and northern atolls. The agency cautioned that haze conditions are likely to persist over the Maldives for the next five days.
MET explained that the haze is being carried into the country by prevailing northeasterly winds.
As conditions deteriorate, visibility has fallen to as low as three kilometres in some areas. Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution when outdoors, particularly during sea travel, and to pay close attention to safety measures.
Haze is a recurring phenomenon in the Maldives, typically affecting the country toward the end of the year and in the early months of the new year. In previous instances, haze levels have risen to the extent of raising health concerns.
