The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has announced that the third phase of the Boduthakurufaanu Magu development project in Malé City will commence during the upcoming month of Ramadan.

The third phase will cover the stretch from Republic Square to the Henveiru Terminal.

Two segments of the project have already been completed. Under the first segment, the section from the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) building to the centre of Republic Square was widened and upgraded into a four-lane carriageway. Construction on that segment began on 22 August 2025 and was completed in December last year.

Work on the second segment, extending from the Local Market to the North Harbour, was subsequently carried out and the upgraded dual carriageway was opened on Sunday. Landscaping and tree-planting works in the area were completed prior to reopening the road to traffic.

Speaking to the media following the completion of the second phase, MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Saudee stated that preparations are now underway to begin works from Izzuddin Jetty towards the Henveiru Terminal. He confirmed that sheet piling operations required for the road expansion will commence during Ramadan.

“During Ramadan, we will begin the sheet piling works and proceed with the project. If the work continues as scheduled, we expect to complete the entire road by April or May,” Saudee said.

He added that the second phase encountered several challenges, including temporary suspensions due to high tides and delays caused by adverse sea conditions. However, once conditions stabilised, additional manpower was deployed to accelerate progress and maintain the project timeline.
