A traditional Maldivian Thun’du Kunaa has been gifted to the United Nations Headquarters in New York, where it was officially unveiled for display.

The unveiling ceremony was held on 20 March 2026, with the Maldivian Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Dr Ali Naseer Mohamed, presenting the hand-woven mat. This marks the first time a Maldivian cultural item has been displayed at the UN Headquarters.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the donation was initiated following President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to the United Nations in 2024. The gesture commemorates both the 60th anniversary of Maldives’ independence and 60 years of the country’s membership in the United Nations.

The Thun’du Kunaa was specially designed and hand-woven by an artisan from Gaafu Dhaalu Gadhdhoo, an island widely recognised for its traditional craftsmanship. The piece reflects the country’s rich cultural heritage and longstanding tradition of skilled hand-weaving.

The Ministry stated that the display of the Thun’du Kunaa at the UN highlights the Maldives’ cultural identity on an international platform while strengthening its presence within the global community.
