Ground has been broken for the development of 2,000 housing units in Kulhudhuffushi City, with a ceremony held on the island to mark the commencement of what is set to be one of the largest housing projects undertaken to address housing needs in the area.
The ceremony was attended by Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib, Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam, Housing Development Corporation (HDC) Managing Director Brigadier General (Rtd) Ali Zuhair, with the project awarded to Team One India Pvt Ltd, a company with over 30 years of experience in design and engineering.
Speaking at the ceremony, HDC MD Zuhair described the project as a significant step towards providing a permanent solution to housing challenges faced by residents of Kulhudhuffushi, noting that the initiative reflects longstanding demand for adequate housing in the city.
Under the project, 13 towers of 14 storeys will be constructed, comprising three-bedroom apartments of approximately 900 square feet, with 1,856 units planned as part of mixed residential and private housing developments equipped with modern facilities.
The development follows an earlier project to build 400 housing units launched in May 2023 which was later halted, with the government stating that the current project will play a key role in delivering a long-term solution to housing issues in Kulhudhuffushi.
