The Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has reported that MVR 45.3 million has been collected as Zakat so far this year.
MIRA’s March revenue report shows that MVR 27.4 million was collected in March alone, representing a 16.2 per cent increase compared to MVR 23.6 million recorded in the same month last year. Overall collections for the year have risen from MVR 34.85 million during the same period last year to MVR 45.32 million.
The increase comes amid revisions to Zakat thresholds introduced on December 21, 2019. The Zakat House of Maldives has set the current Nisab for cash at MVR 19527.90, up from the previous threshold of MVR 11,191.95.
MIRA is responsible for collecting Zakat in the Maldives, with payments available online through its official portal, where individuals can also calculate the amount payable.
