Work on the international-standard surfing stadium planned in Malé has been delayed due to revisions to the project’s design, Minister of Fitness, Sports and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu has said.

Speaking at a press briefing held at the President’s Office, the minister said the delay was due to changes in the size and structure of the facility, with the project now revised from a prefabricated design to a concrete structure following consultations with relevant sporting bodies.

He noted that the building has been expanded by 50 feet, adding that the change was made to ensure long-term durability and reduce maintenance costs, particularly given the high salt exposure in the project area.

The minister said technical experts had also recommended constructing the facility using concrete, and that drawings are now being finalised, with work expected to commence within the month.

The project was awarded to Chinese company, with the agreement signed on April 18, 2024. Demolition of the Bridge View platform began on November 25, 2024, as part of preparations to redevelop the area for international-level competitions.

The stadium is planned to include spectator areas, a rostrum, media and commentary facilities, camera decks, an observation area, gym, multipurpose hall, conference room and terrace.

Once completed, the facility is expected to support international surfing competitions in the Maldives and contribute to the development of the sport in the country.
