Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla has addressed the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), currently underway in Istanbul, Türkiye.

In his address, the Speaker highlighted the growing responsibility of parliaments in responding to global instability and conflicts.

He stressed the need to empower people, particularly youth and women, by improving access to education, healthcare and employment, while also ensuring their participation in decision-making.

The Speaker emphasised the importance of peace, dialogue and international cooperation, noting that stronger inter-parliamentary ties are key to global stability.

He further highlighted the link between climate change and security, pointing to the disproportionate impact on small island states such as the Maldives, and called for stronger international support.

Abdul Raheem also stressed the importance of justice, strong democratic institutions, accountable governance, human rights and the rule of law in building a sustainable future.

He noted ongoing efforts by the People’s Majlis to strengthen governance, including increasing public participation and improving access to parliamentary work through the e-petition system.

The Speaker described the IPU as a key platform for dialogue and called for greater cooperation among countries. He also expressed concern over rising tensions in the Middle East and urged nations to work together towards peaceful solutions.

He concluded by reaffirming the Maldives’ commitment to working with the international community to build a peaceful and just future.
