President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that World Thalassaemia Day serves as a reminder of the importance of compassion, humanity and supporting individuals and families affected by the condition.

In a message shared on X to mark the occasion, the President said the annual observance highlights the need to build a caring and inclusive society where every Maldivian child and family receives support and assistance. He added that strengthening compassion and social solidarity was essential in building a stronger nation.

The President further stated that individuals living with thalassaemia should be treated as members of one national family, noting that it remains the responsibility of the Government to ensure access to necessary healthcare, social protection and opportunities for affected individuals and their families.

The Government has also undertaken efforts in recent years to strengthen healthcare services for thalassaemia patients, including the establishment of a modern thalassaemia centre in Hulhumalé Phase I. In addition, individuals living with thalassaemia are currently provided a monthly allowance of MVR 2,000 under a Government assistance programme.

World Thalassaemia Day is observed annually on May 8 to raise awareness about the disease and honour those who have lost their lives due to thalassaemia.
