Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Ali Ihusaan has stated that the role and services of the Department of National Registration will continue to expand in the coming years as the Government moves to strengthen the country’s civil registration system.
He made the remarks while speaking at a ceremony held to mark the 42nd anniversary of the Department of National Registration (DNR). During his address, the minister said the Government intends to further modernise the national registration framework and transition towards a more comprehensive civil registration system.
Minister Ihusaan noted that rapid technological developments and evolving international standards require institutions to continuously adapt and improve their services. He stressed the importance of remaining prepared to adopt changes necessary to strengthen administrative systems and public services in line with global standards.
The minister also highlighted efforts undertaken over the past year and a half to expand DNR services across different parts of the Maldives, making services more accessible to the public. He expressed appreciation to employees and former staff members who have contributed to the institution’s development over the years.
Established in 1984, the Department of National Registration is responsible for maintaining civil registration records and issuing national identity cards to Maldivian citizens. The institution also serves as the regulatory authority overseeing civil registration services in the country.
