Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed has stated that the upcoming Addu Business Dialogue is intended to serve as a pilot project for broader economic development initiatives planned across the Maldives.

Speaking at a press briefing held at the President’s Office, the minister said the Government aims to use discussions held in Addu City to develop economic models that could later be expanded to other regions of the country. He noted that the initiative forms part of the Administration’s efforts to strengthen small and medium enterprises and stimulate regional economic growth.

Minister Saeed stated that the dialogue was developed following extensive Cabinet discussions and would focus on identifying the concerns, opportunities and requirements of businesses operating in Addu City. He added that business leaders from both Addu and Malé, along with professionals from sectors including tourism, fisheries, construction, agriculture and retail, are expected to participate in the discussions.

The minister further noted that information gathered during the symposium would be submitted to the Cabinet to determine possible incentives and development measures planned for 2027, 2028 and 2029. He also highlighted that the Government had already introduced several measures to support small businesses, including concessions related to port operations and import quotas.

According to the minister, more than 500 parties have registered to participate in the dialogue, scheduled to be held on May 13 and 14. He said the initiative also supports the Government’s plans to develop Addu City into an information technology and business hub through targeted incentives and long-term economic planning.
