Minister of Education, Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development Dr Ismail Shafeeu has stated that higher education institutions should focus on producing quality graduates rather than increasing the number of graduates.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony of Islamic University of Maldives, Minister Dr Shafeeu highlighted the importance of improving the quality and credibility of higher education in the Maldives.
He stated that expenditure on higher education remains significantly higher than spending during earlier stages of formal education, stressing the importance of ensuring quality outcomes from such investment. He said degree and master’s programmes should focus on producing capable and competent graduates who can contribute meaningfully to society and the economy.
The minister further stated that graduates from universities and colleges in the Maldives should be able to compete equally with students graduating from institutions abroad. He warned that public confidence in local higher education institutions could decline if efforts are not made to improve quality and strengthen trust in the education system.
According to the minister, several sectors have already demonstrated that quality higher education can be provided within the Maldives without the need for students to pursue undergraduate studies overseas. He added that continued efforts are needed to strengthen institutions, build public trust and ensure education contributes positively to national development and society.
