Senior figures of the People's National Congress (PNC) have denied claims that members of the party’s Senate opposed a proposal put forward by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during a recent meeting.

PNC Chairperson and Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla addressed the matter in a post on X, stating that no proposal seeking a specific decision had been submitted by President Dr Muizzu during the Senate meeting.

Abdul Raheem said the PNC operates in line with democratic principles and consultation, adding that attempts to portray divisions within the party were inaccurate. He further stated that the party remains united behind President Dr Muizzu.

PNC Parliamentary Group Leader and Inguraidhoo MP Ibrahim Falah also rejected the claims, describing the reports as false.

Falah stated that President Dr Muizzu continues to act in accordance with the party’s constitution, established principles, and a consultative approach. He added that the President did not direct Senate members to decide on any matter in a particular way during the meeting, and instead allowed members to deliberate and make decisions independently.

He also criticised what he described as the spread of misinformation by certain media outlets and individuals, alleging that some parties were attempting to influence journalists and media organisations through incentives and financial means.

Speaking to MMTV, PNC Spokesperson Uz Mohamed Firzul also rejected allegations that President Dr Muizzu had attempted to push through a specific decision during the Senate meeting.

Uz Firzul said all matters discussed during the meeting were presented for consultation among Senate members before decisions were made collectively.
