CROSSROADS Maldives has been selected as the host venue for the World Travel Awards (WTA) Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony 2026, scheduled to be held on 27 September.

The multi-island leisure and lifestyle destination will welcome tourism industry leaders from across the region for the prestigious event, which is scheduled to coincide with World Tourism Day.

Located just 15 minutes by boat from Velana International Airport, CROSSROADS Maldives is inspired by the Maldives' historic role as a trading hub connecting Asia, Africa and the Middle East. The destination spans four interconnected islands and features three resorts – SAii Lagoon Maldives, Hard Rock Hotel Maldives and SO/ Maldives.

The gala ceremony marks the return of the Indian Ocean leg of the World Travel Awards Grand Tour to the Maldives. The annual programme consists of red-carpet events held across different regions of the world to recognise excellence in the travel and tourism industry.

World Travel Awards Founder Graham Cooke said the decision to return to the Maldives reflected the strength of the country's tourism sector. He noted that CROSSROADS Maldives exemplifies the nation's reputation for luxury tourism and its commitment to innovative, world-class visitor experiences.

Alexander Traeger, General Manager of SAii Lagoon Maldives, Curio Collection by Hilton and CROSSROADS Marina, described the opportunity to host the ceremony as a significant milestone for the destination. He said the event reflects the vision of bringing together diverse experiences within a single integrated destination.

The Maldives last hosted a World Travel Awards VIP ceremony in 2017. Since then, the country has continued to receive international recognition for its tourism industry, including awards for sustainability and hospitality excellence. The Maldives currently holds the title of World's Leading Destination.

Visit Maldives Corporation Managing Director Ibrahim Shiuree said the return of the World Travel Awards presents an opportunity to showcase not only the country's natural beauty and hospitality, but also its commitment to responsible and sustainable tourism. He added that the event would allow industry leaders to experience the culture, warmth and unique appeal of the Maldives firsthand.
