Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Dr Abdulla Muththalib has said the North Hithadhoo by-election results showed that the majority of voters residing in Hithadhoo placed their trust in the ruling People's National Congress (PNC).
In a post on X following the announcement of the preliminary results, minister Dr Muththalib described the outcome as an encouraging message for the ruling party, stating that voters who experience the Government's work and development efforts firsthand in Addu had expressed confidence in the PNC. He noted that while the majority of voters in Hithadhoo backed the PNC, the majority of North Hithadhoo constituents who voted in Malé supported the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
According to figures shared by the minister, PNC candidate Ahmed Saeed secured 958 votes in Hithadhoo compared to 924 votes for MDP candidate Abdulla Sodhiq, giving the ruling party a lead of 34 votes in the constituency's home polling area. In the Malé voting area, however, Sodhiq received 451 votes against Saeed's 355 votes.
Preliminary results released by the Elections Commission show Sodhiq receiving 1,375 votes, representing 51.15 per cent of ballots cast, while Saeed secured 1,313 votes, or 48.85 per cent.
Minster Dr Muththalib thanked those who had voted for the PNC and said the party respected every vote cast in the election. He added that the Government would continue working harder, improving its performance and delivering results for all citizens.
