President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Government's commitment to ensuring that all food consumed in the Maldives is safe, nutritious and trustworthy.
In a message shared on X on the occasion of World Food Satefy Day, the President said the occasion serves as a reminder of the importance of safe food in preventing foodborne diseases, protecting public health and supporting sustainable development. He noted that most foodborne illnesses are preventable through stronger systems based on data-driven action, collective commitment and cooperation across all sectors of society.
Highlighting Government efforts to strengthen food safety, President Dr Muizzu said key initiatives include formulating regulations under the Food Safety Act, strengthening border food control measures and building national technical capacity for food safety monitoring and testing. He said the government remains firmly committed to ensuring that food consumed in the Maldives meets the highest standards of safety and quality.
The President also expressed solidarity with communities facing humanitarian crises, including those in Gaza, where unsafe food and contaminated water continue to worsen human suffering. He called on the international community to work together to address these challenges and emphasised the importance of stronger cooperation and adherence to international standards.
President Dr Muizzu said the global challenges posed by foodborne diseases and food safety require shared responsibility and collective action. He added that a safer future for all can be achieved through greater collaboration, stronger systems and sustained commitment to food safety.
World Food Safety Day is observed annually on June 7 to raise awareness of the importance of preventing, detecting and managing foodborne risks and ensuring access to safe food.
