President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises Hassan Zareer as President of the Local Government Authority (LGA).

Zareer currently serves as Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises and will assume responsibility for overseeing the authority, which plays a key role in the administration and development of local governance in the Maldives.

The Local Government Authority operates under the Decentralisation Act and is tasked with overseeing the implementation of decentralisation policies and supporting the functioning of local councils across the country.

Under Article 140 of the Constitution and Article 59 of the Decentralisation Act, the authority is answerable to the People's Majlis through a minister appointed by the President.
