PayPal services have officially been launched in the Maldives, marking the introduction of one of the world's largest online payment platforms to the country and expanding access to international digital payment services for individuals and businesses.

The service was launched by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu at a ceremony held at Barceló Nasandhura. The rollout follows the issuance of an inward remittance licence to Techfin Maldives, a subsidiary of Ooredoo Maldives, in October 2025, with testing and preparations for the service carried out earlier this year.

Speaking at the ceremony, PayPal Vice President and General Manager Amir Villani described the launch as an important step in connecting Maldivian individuals and businesses to trusted global financial services. He said the introduction of PayPal would create new opportunities for freelancers, entrepreneurs and businesses by providing access to reliable international payment solutions while supporting the Maldives' broader digital transformation efforts.

Villani added that improved access to global financial networks would help expand economic opportunities and strengthen participation in the international digital economy. The service is expected to provide greater access to online payments for freelancers, small businesses and individuals engaged in cross-border transactions.

Ooredoo Maldives Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Shadi Qawasmi said the launch represents another step in the company's efforts to expand internationally recognised digital services in the Maldives and support the growth of the country's digital economy. He noted that Ooredoo has continued to focus on strengthening digital connectivity and introducing services that create greater opportunities for individuals and businesses.

The introduction of PayPal was identified as a Government priority, with efforts to bring the service to the Maldives announced in August 2024. The rollout also forms part of initiatives to modernise digital financial services, including the expansion of e-wallet services and efforts to improve access to online payment solutions in the country.
